RESOURCES:Intra-Uterine Device (IUD / Coil) Facts
IUDīs are highly effective contraceptives, requiring fitting by a health professional and regular checks, but not relying on the memory or motivation of the user once inserted. They are inserted through the neck of the womb (cervix) into the cavity of the womb, and fine threads are left attached to the IUD but hang just outside the cervix for checking purposes and for ease of removal. However the IUD does not protect against the spread of sexually infection, and if a woman has already got chlamydia, the insertion of an IUD can cause a "flare up" of symptoms, and may result in pevic inflammation.
The IUD is therefore ideal for monogamous couples. If either partner has (or have ever had) more than one sexual partner, or if they in any way unsure of their partners sexual history, then condoms or femidoms should also be used.
There are several kinds of IUD and an IUS (combined with the hormone levonogestrel) Read about different types of IUD here
