PLAY-IT-SAFE™

Play-it-Safe™ was developed in South Africa with Sherston-Sheshani in line with the South African Department of Education's Life Orientation Curriculum Statements, and in consultation with young people.

Play-it-Safe is very honest about what causes and does not cause the spread of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.  One key feature is to address issues such as sexual assertiveness, dry sex, child abuse and some other traditional beliefs and practices - providing information and provoking debate, so that learners have the information and skills they need to make healthy choices.

How to play the Game

Play-it-Safe is an on screen board game.  As players move around the board they come into contact with statements and questions which stimulate discussion and reinforce or elicit teacher input.

Playing highlights areas where understanding may be lacking.

  • The game teaches facts through questions and true / false statements.

  • Through these statements clear distinction is made between safe and risky sexual behaviour.

  • Advancing around the board brings players into contact with various advice centres and resources where contraceptive and sexual health services can be accessed: e.g. PPASA and Lovelife

Players are also directed at various intervals during the game to make an assertive statement which strengthens their ability to express their own needs and decline unwanted pressure.

Peer education is a key feature of the game.  The game offers the group peer education opportunities in a safe environment, practising use of language relating to sex, whilst building confidence.

Participants can access help at any time during the game.  Links from this site enable students to engage in fact finding using the resources page and links page.   Free downloadable presentations of pictures are available on the downloads page of this site to supplement teacher input, although access to our Compact Contraceptive Demonstration and Safer Sex Kits would be an advantage.
