LISA BROTHERTON (Glossop Women's Aid and the Freedom Programme) For as long as Lisa can remember she has helped out with younger children at the local nursery volunteering her spare time for trips and activities in the summer holidays. It was when she started university that she began to work with young people. She began by working alongside others running several junior youth clubs in deprived areas around Oldham, running several projects based on the Every Child Matters Outcomes. She then went on to run a summer play scheme for children that were socially excluded, in certain areas of Manchester. As a graduate, her work became more targeted when she joined the Youth Offending Team and worked in an Inclusion Project. Her focus was working to engage hard to reach young people who were at risk of offending or had been convicted of anti-social behaviour orders. She now works as a child and family support worker at Glossop Women's Aid, and is a Freedom Programme Trainer. KATY BRIGG (Glossop Women's Aid and the Freedom Programme) Katy began working with young people over 6 years ago and this led her to complete a degree in Youth and Community Work. Having worked for both voluntary and statutory organisations her role has been extremely varied, ranging from engaging with young people deemed at risk of offending and those who have already been involved with the Youth Offending Sevices, and to generic youth provision, both in centres and on a mobile unit. Katy has delivered several projects surrounding the five outcomes of Every Child Matters, including alcohol awareness and sexual health. He was also surprised by the “Victorian Values” that we still have in this country. His role is unique in the way that he sits in the Youth Service and work alongside the Teenage Pregnancy team, Brook and Sexual Health Services. He delivers training to staff and young people, information sessions and workshops, A Drop-In “clinic” and is responsible for Salford’s condom distribution scheme as well as updating websites and ways to contact young people.
