Contraception Education's founder Barbara Hastings-Asatourian was
exposed from an early stage in her career to health inequalities and teenage
health issues. She qualified as a nurse in 1975 and continued into Midwifery,
Health Visiting, then teaching in Further Education, Higher Education in 1992,
becoming a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education where she worked until she
retired in 2010 to concentrate on Contraception Education CIC.
Barbara has developed a number of sex education resources of her own, and has partnered with other organisations to make their products available in the Contraception Education store. Her first and most widely know resource is Contraception the Board Game
At first Contraception Education was registered as a company limited by shares in 2001 to protect the IPR and act as a vehicle to distribute the board game. In 2009 it was re-registered with Companies House as a CIC and now operates with the values of a Social Enterprise, reinvesting and donating profit to worthy causes.
Barbara is passionately interested in "all things health", including her leisure activity of teaching Yoga and Meditation.
Barbara now spends a large percentage of her time talking to groups of people in many different settings - one example can be found at http://schoolspeakers.co.uk/speaker-profiles/barbara-hastings.html and also advising people on the telephone on a one to one basis about health in general, and sexual health in particular for example at http://www.greatvine.com/barbara-hastings-asatourian
Turnover is now largely raised through the sale of resources in the new one stop store. This is how we fund our social enterprise. It enables us to pay wages and operate our training activities without external funding, which is liberating and really satisfying.
