Hilary has extensive experience in training teachers and health professionals in sexual health, school sex education and human relationships, and has written several widely-used classroom resources and training manuals.

She was involved, almost from the beginning, in the SHARE research project in Scotland on the effectiveness of sex education, developed the SHARE materials and training and is now managing the dissemination of the modified programme in both Scotland and England.

She has also worked with professionals across the learning disability field, and produced 'Chance to Choose: sex and relationships education for young people with special needs' and 'Picture Yourself 1 and 2: Sex and Relationships Education for People with Learning Disabilities'.

She was formerly a teacher and senior health authority manager and now runs Me-and-Us Ltd, which specialises in SRE resources and publications and training.

Carol Robinson is a sexual health outreach nurse working with vulnerable, hard to reach young people in Thanet, Kent. Her work involves needs assessment and research to inform the development and provision of sexual health outreach services and educational programmes to young people. The drama and the HYP (Healthy Young People) workshops have emerged from her outreach work. Carol was highly commended in the Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year 2004 Awards for pioneering this innovative approach to teaching young people about sexual health and emotional well-being.   She is also employed as a Lecturer in Sexual Health at Canterbury Christ Church University. And her qualifications include BSc (Hons) Community Health, RGN, NDN, Specialist Contraceptive Nurse, PG Cert Ed.

JAN SANDERS

Jan Sanders trained as a General Nurse, Midwife and Nurse Tutor in London.  Since 1972 she has worked in the field of contraception and sexual health and was instrumental in setting up the first “One-Stop Sexual Health Clinic” for young people in this country.

 

In 1987 she became a nurse specialist and lecturer in Contraception and Sexual Health for Salisbury Health Care Trust .  Since then she has lectured throughout the UK and Internationally.

 

She has worked on several National Committees and acted as a sexual health adviser for the Department of Health

 

 
 



 

 

BARBARA HASTINGS-ASATOURIAN

On qualifying as B.Nurs in 1975 Barbara worked as a staff nurse, a health visitor and a midwife before her teacher training/ Cert Ed in 1989. There she invented a prototype of Contraception the Board Game®.  She began teaching nurses in 1991 and gained her MSc in 1996.  In 2001 the University of Salford enabled her to set up Contraception Education to disseminate her resource.  She is now Managing Director of the company a post she holds alongside her Senior Lectureship at Salford, and her honorary fellowship at the University of Manchester.   She has developed four new sex education resources for the UK and one for South Africa.   This work has so far taken her to Brazil, the USA, Thailand and South Africa.                                                                                                                  

Barbara is regularly called on by the media to comment on sexual health matters, and has had recent appearances on BBC1’s 4X4 reports, BBC2’s daily politics show, local and national radio including South Africa’s SAFM.  She has also undertaken with her colleague Julie Wray an evaluation of Sure Start Plus in Manchester and Salford.

She has since established a training arm of Contraception Education for training professionals working with young people.  This seminar is one of the activities of the training arm.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Helen Knox is the UK’s first Outreach Clinical Nurse Specialist in Contraception and Sexual Health and Founder of the Sexplained Foundation.

She is author and publisher of Sexplained Books and WillyWorries.com. She is a BBC Online Health Sexpert but also writes a regular column for the main newspaper in Barbados. Helen has appeared numerous times on live TV and Radio phone-in shows in the UK and overseas and is regularly quoted in Cosmopolitan and other UK publications to promote understanding about contraception and sexual health by the wider public.

In 2007, supported by SonyBMG and TVT Records, she’s launching Sexplained Music Awards: a unique fundraising talent competition aimed at encouraging much needed study about contraception, sexual health, drugs and sex, men’s health and internet safety amongst young people in order to provide much needed resources for young people in the UK and, initially, the Caribbean. Jackie is Outreach Manager at Brook Manchester and is responsible for developing the outreach strategy working directly with young people to raise awareness of sexual health issues. She delivers training to professionals in young people/sexual health issues and she works extensively with other agencies to promote better sexual health among young people.  Jackie is responsible for communications at Brook Manchester and liaises with the media to advocate on behalf of young people.

 

 

Jackie trained as an English teacher, and then abandoned Shakespeare for the voluntary sector working at a hospice in both the education & communications departments for 4 years.  She finally arrived at Brook nearly 5 years ago where she has enjoyed the most rewarding role of her career.
